Using AI for moodboards without copying living artists: where is the line?
My own rule, for what it is worth: AI output is fine on an internal moodboard as long as it never leaves the room as a deliverable, and I never put a living artist's name in a prompt. Beyond that line I stop being sure, which is why I am asking.

Creatisimo, "Using AI for moodboards without copying living artists: where is the line?", https://creatisimo.net/topic/using-ai-for-moodboards-without-copying-living-artists-where/, accessed 2026-10-26.Context. I run comps and moodboards at a small branding studio. Clients like seeing eight directions in an afternoon instead of three in a week, and image generators are good at that. The trouble starts when a board image looks a lot like one specific illustrator. Nobody typed the name, but a client points at it and says "that one, exactly that". Now I have a reference that I cannot cleanly source, and a client who wants it made.
What we do at the moment:
- Boards are labeled as AI-assisted and marked internal, not for production.
- Anything a client approves gets redrawn or commissioned. No generated frame becomes the final.
- Prompts describe mood, palette, composition and medium. No artist names, no "in the style of".
- If a generated image strongly resembles a recognizable body of work, it comes off the board, even if no one would ever notice.
What I do not know: whether "looks like one artist" is a real risk or just my conscience being loud, whether naming a medium and era is enough to stay clear, and whether other studios write this into client paperwork. Does your sign-off process mention AI moodboards at all, or is it all unwritten habit?

That is too long. Keep it under 6,000 characters.
