HELVETICA - look, its a masterpiece. but when every hospital, airport, and corporate brand uses it the “clean neutral” vibe just becomes “generic”

MONTSERRAT - the free geometric sans that launched a thousand startups. i see it on literally 40% of the websites i review

POPPINS - the other free geometric sans that ate the internet. every saas dashboard and fintech app
my alternatives: DM Sans (free, similar vibe but tighter spacing), Outfit (more modern proportions), or just use the actual font theyre all copying which is Futura
LOBSTER - the script font of cheap restaurant logos and early 2010s wedding invites. please let it retire

PLAYFAIR DISPLAY. its the montserrat of serifs. every “luxury” brand on etsy uses it. every wedding invitation template. every boutique hotel website
alternatives: Cormorant (more refined), Fraunces (variable and quirky), or if you want something truly special, spend the $30 on Freight Display
COMIC SANS. ok hear me out - i know this is the obvious answer but some designers have been using it “ironically” in anti-design work and now its genuiely everywhere again
alternatives for that casual handwritten vibe: Comic Neue (the tasteful redesign), Architect’s Daughter, or Caveat. all free, all better
ROBOTO. google made it the default for everything and now half the web looks identical. its fine but its the design equivalent of beige paint
alternatives: Source Sans 3 (adobe’s free sans, way more personality), Nunito Sans (warmer), or IBM Plex Sans (technical but distinctive)
RALEWAY. every startup pitch deck in 2019 used raleway thin and now its permanently associated with failed saas products in my brain lol
alternatives: Jost (inspired by futura but with modern proportions), Manrope (geometric but legible), Urbanist (clean and fresh)
OPEN SANS. the most aggressively neutral font on google fonts. not bad, not good, just… there. like background music in an elevator
alternatives: Inter (designed for screens, way more refined), Public Sans (US govt commissioned it and its actually excellent), Figtree (newer google font thats basically what Open Sans should have been)

the common theme: most commonly used fonts got overused because theyre free and safe. the alternatives are usually also free but just… less discovered. the google fonts algorithm has a lot to answer for lol
