Best Sans Serif Fonts in 2026 - Community Picks and Why

Sans-serif is the default choice for about 80% of digital design work, which means everyone has an opinion and most people are using the same 5 fonts.

I want to know what the community is actually using beyond the obvious (Inter, Roboto, Open Sans). What are the best sans serif fonts people are choosing for design work in 2026?

My current rotation:

  • Plus Jakarta Sans - the one Inter replacement I’ve actually stuck with. Geometry with warmth.
  • Geist - Vercel’s typeface, designed for code-adjacent UI, extremely clean
  • Instrument Sans - humanist touches, less sterile than pure geometric options
  • Sora - excellent for international/multilingual projects, thorough glyph coverage
  • Hanken Grotesk - the “Swiss without Swiss price” option

What I’m retiring:

  • Poppins (overused and the letterform proportions feel a bit amateur now)
  • Source Sans (not bad but the spacing feels loose)

Geist is underrated because most people associate it with developer tools. But it works just as well for product UI and even some editorial contexts. The condensed weight is particularly good.

Instrument Sans is new to me - looking it up now.

The Poppins retirement is fair. It dominated 2020-2022 and now reads as a specific era of Canva-native design that clients are starting to notice.

For best sans serif fonts in the “humanist” subcategory: Nunito and DM Sans are still going strong. Outfit is getting more use in consumer product spaces.

Adding: Bricolage Grotesque for anything that needs personality. It’s not neutral-corporate like Inter but it’s professional enough for tech and creative brands.

Also General Sans (Fontshare) - completely free, excellent quality, looks like a mid-range paid option.

Interesting that nobody mentioned IBM Plex Sans yet. For any tech/enterprise clients it’s a legitimately good choice - enterprise credibility with better optical design than Roboto.

Also: Atkinson Hyperlegible for any accessibility-forward work. It was designed specifically for low vision readers and it’s open source.
