Free Texture Packs - Wood, Marble, Paper, Concrete, and More

Textures are one of the most underused elements in my packaging work and one of the first things I reach for when a design feels flat. Compiling the resource list I’ve been using.

Categories worth building a library for:

Natural materials: wood grain, marble, concrete, stone. Work for premium product categories, home goods, artisan food brands. The wood grain quality varies wildly - look for ones with realistic directional grain and knot patterns, not tiled repeats.

Paper and print: newsprint, kraft, heavyweight cotton, textured cardstock. Essential for editorial work and for giving digital designs tactile warmth.

Organic and handmade: watercolor washes, ink bleeds, linen weave, canvas. Best for brands with artisan or craft positioning.

Industrial: rusted metal, concrete block, wire mesh, brushed aluminum. Work for manufacturing, automotive, and technical product brands.

Free resources I’ve returned to: Unsplash has a solid texture collection and the licensing is clear. Subtle Patterns for web-use tileable backgrounds. Lostandtaken.com (older but the quality remains high).

Paid collections worth the cost: The ones on Creative Market from dedicated texture creators tend to have better color range and resolution than bundled free packs.

What’s in your texture library that you wouldn’t give up?

Marble textures are the ones I replace most often because the free versions are immediately recognizable as “the free marble.” Having a few paid high-res scans with accurate color variation is worth the cost given how often it’s requested in packaging work.

Subtle Patterns is still one I recommend. For web work the tileable format and the clear licensing make it practical in a way that ad-hoc texture sourcing isn’t. The quality is predictably good for background textures specifically.

@MaxFlare83 for the paper category - if you shoot your own, scanner textures of actual materials are better than any stock I’ve found. A flatbed scan at high DPI of interesting paper gives you a texture nobody else has and the resolution holds up at any size.

Concrete textures are in every other packaging brief right now. The overexposed flat concrete reads generic. What works is architectural concrete with interesting pour lines, aggregate variation, and color complexity. Those are harder to find free.

for digital illustration work i keep a set of watercolor washes and paper grain specifically for finishing layers. the organic imperfection reads much better in print than perfectly clean vector. adds a few minutes to the export process but the result is consistently better received.
