Best Fonts for Certificates, Diplomas, and Formal Documents

got asked to design certificates for a university graduation ceremony and realized i have strong opinions about fonts for diplomas and formal documents that nobody asked for lol

my go-to fonts for certificates:

  • Garamond (specifically EB Garamond for the free version). timeless. elegant. the italic is gorgeous for names
  • Playfair Display for headers. high contrast between thick and thin strokes gives that engraved feel
  • Cormorant for body text. has that old-world quality without feeling stuffy
  • for the “fancy script” element: Pinyon Script or Great Vibes. NOT Edwardian Script which every template uses

hot take: most certificate templates look terrible because they use too many fonts. stick to 2 max. one serif for names/titles, one script for “presented to” type labels. thats it.

another hot take: gold foil effects in digital certificates almost always look cheap. if its not actually printed with foil, just use a subtle metallic gradient or skip it entirely

for diploma design specifically, the biggest mistake i see is trying to make digital PDFs look like physical documents. design for the medium. if its going to be viewed on screen 90% of the time, optimize for screen

what fonts do you reach for when designing certificates and formal documents? any templates you actually recommend?

strong agree on the “2 fonts max” rule. the worst certificates ive seen use like 5 different typefaces - a script for the header, a serif for the name, a sans for the body, another script for decorative elements, and then some random display font for the organization name. visual chaos

also +1 for EB Garamond. its criminally underused considering its free

The gold foil hot take is correct. ive reviewed portfolio pieces from design students that have these glossy gold gradients on digital certificates and they always look like clipart. actual foil stamping has a specific quality that gradient overlays just cant replicate

for fonts for diplomas, id add Crimson Pro to the list. its like a more modern Garamond with excellent readability

lora is another great free option that works beautifully for certificates. slightly more contemporary than garamond but still has that formal elegance. the bold weight is gorgeous for names

for the script element i actually love Tangerine on google fonts. very delicate and ornamental without being unreadable like some script fonts

question: do you approach certificate design differently for digital vs print? i do a lot of online course platforms and the certificates are 100% digital (PDF downloads). feels like the traditional formal aesthetic doesnt translate well to screen viewing but i dont want them to look too casual either

@Snaxx_TechGrid great question. for purely digital certificates id actually lean more toward clean sans-serifs with one elegant accent font. the super formal serif + script combo can feel dated on screen. think about how apple or google design their certification badges - clean, modern, still feels premium but not old-fashioned

also for digital: add a QR code for verification. makes it feel more legitimate than any font choice
