## Question by Clara B., 2026-11-05

I teach high school art, and my students have started bringing in AI generated images as references for drawing assignments. Something I keep noticing is a certain look. Faces and hands seem polished, like a magazine retouch, skin has no pores, fabric looks almost like plastic, and everything has a soft glow. Even images that are meant to look like old film or a quick phone snapshot have it.

I would like to explain this to my class in a way that is more accurate than "it just looks fake". Why do so many of these images share the glossy, over smoothed look? Is it the way the images are made, the way the tools are tuned, or what they were trained on?

And since students will ask: is that look a reliable way to tell a generated image from a photograph? I do not want to teach them a rule of thumb that breaks the first time someone brings in a better image.

Several things stack up. Diffusion models build an image by removing noise step by step, and averaging over many plausible details tends to give smooth results unless the model is pushed to commit to fine texture. Many tools are also tuned toward what people rate as attractive, which means clean skin, bright color and soft light. And upscaling or face restoration steps can smooth things further. Putting "film grain" or "pores" in a prompt can reduce it, but it is not a guarantee.

It is simply because the images are low resolution. If you zoom in on any generated picture you will see the smoothing, since the model does not make enough pixels. Higher resolution output fixes it completely.
