## Question by Wren T., 2026-11-04

I am a tattoo artist and more clients now show up with AI generated reference pictures on their phones. Mostly it is fine, they just want something like a koi fish wrapped around a peony, and the picture helps them explain what they mean. Where I get stuck is my own workflow. I have been thinking about using an image generator myself to rough out how a design should sit on an arm or a ribcage, since the flow of a piece matters more than any single element.

I do not want to end up tattooing something that is a close copy of a real artist's work. That feels wrong to me, and tattooers are a small world. I also do not know how I would even tell if an output leans too hard on someone's style.

How do you use AI for composition and placement ideas without ending up copying anyone? What would you do with the client's reference, and where do you draw the line so the final drawing is actually mine?

Use it for layout, not for rendering. Ask for shapes, flow, negative space, where the weight sits on the body. Then close it and draw the piece yourself from your own knowledge of koi and peonies. If you catch yourself tracing the output line for line, stop. At that point you are not using it for composition any more, you are copying whatever it learned from.
